OCCRG vs. Team Unicorn: Preview

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls are gearing up to take on their final opponent for the 2011 season, Team Unicorn from the Mad Rollin’ Dolls of Madison, Wisconsin, at the Coralville Marriott on October 15th for OCCRG’s third annual Monster’s Brawl.  Doors open at 6:15, bout starts at 7, and as always, there will be an all-ages costume contest at halftime.

After OCCRG’s sweep of Cedar Rapids last month, we have been training hard, pushing our endurance and agility to get ready for the October 15th event.  Team Unicorn is the second-string travel team from Mad Rollin’ Dolls–a formidable group of skaters–some of whom we saw in the March 19th triumphant victory over one of their home teams–the Unholy Rollers.  Team Unicorn also boasts skaters from Mad Rollin’ Dolls all-star travel team, the Dairyland Dolls, currently ranked 6th in the North Central Region of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

In short, they’re kind of a big deal.

However, OCCRG is up to the challenge.  With our solid core of skaters with two whole seasons under their belts, and a crop of up-and-coming skaters, we are at our most formidable, and ready to see off our 2011 season with another win!

Who to watch for on Team Unicorn: Watch for the hard hitting of Hello, Sailor, and the blocking and jamming powerhouse, Splatter Alice, and the deft footwork of Major Kusaknocky.  You’ll be amazed at how these girls adapt and work together.

Be prepared to see more of the OCCRG girls doing double duty as both jammers and blockers–Ophelia Fracture, Triple D Zaster, and Left 4 Deadwards are taking those blocking positions nearly as often as they take the star.  We’ve been hard at work developing strategies and pushing our own limits–expect to see your favorite hard hitters like A Few Screws Lucy and Bat R Up really knocking them out of the park.

We’ll supply the action and the hard hits, you supply the cheers!  Don’t forget, we’re also auctioning off four more jerseys for our uniform fund at this bout.  You can bid on the jerseys of Triple D Zaster, Gladi8her, Killer Baker, and Bat R Up.  You’ll be bidding on one of their old jersey, as well as a fancy, signed and framed 8×10 of the skater by Cathy Kovach Photography.  Help us buy our new uniforms!

Don’t forget about the costume contest!  We’ll have great raffles and prizes as usual, too.  See you on the 15th!

OCCRG vs Cedar Rapids Helldorados Wrap-Up

Former teammates, now rivals, A Few Screws Lucy and Sal Paralyze hug it out on the jam line.

Saturday night at the Coralville Marriott the Old Capitol City Roller Girls took home their 10th win of the season defeating the Cedar RapidsHelldorados 282-66.  OCCRG is the only team in the state of Iowa to be able to boast a double-digit winning record for the season.

Although the Helldorados had a lead coming out of the first jam–due to Ophelia Fracture’s early penalty causing a CRRG power jam–she shot out of the box during the second jam and scored 24 unanswered points, only to be followed up by a 19-0 jam by Left 4 Deadwards.  OCCRG kept the scoreboard hot during the first half, going into halftime with at 186-18 lead.

The second half saw some penalty trouble for both teams, but OCCRG was hit especially hard.  The Helldorados ended up scoring the lion’s share of their points in the second half, due to powerhouse jams by Flashdance YerPantzoff (who scored 45 of her team’s 66 points) and by Sal Paralyze (who almost consistently got to her scoring pass every time she jammed.)  However, the OCCRG early, decisive strike left the Helldorados scrambling.  The final score was 282-66–a well played game and well-fought by both teams.

Stay tuned for all the information about our last bout of the season–the Monster’s Brawl–October 15th versus Team Unicorn from the Mad Rollin’ Dolls of Madison, Wisconsin.

You Make Us Look GREAT!

We have worked hard with our recent makeover, bringing lots of new things: logo, skaters, website and more, but now we need your help.

We want OCCRG to LOOK shiny and new, and we need YOUR help in getting brand new uniforms sporting our great new logo! Roller derby is held together with a DIY glue, so everything you see come bout day is done by our own hands; from the coaching and training to the merch and track setup; we have to do it all ourselves.  Supporting us is supporting local business–and you can help by donating to our new uniform fund, and we have a goal of $3,500 to clothe the whole team. In the coming months, there will be a variety of ways for you to do so, all of which come with perks!

1. Sponsor us! Get in line early to sponsor OCCRG in the 2012 season. Check out the Sponsorship page and download our sponsorship packet for more information.

2. Attend our bouts! These are the biggest events we hold throughout the year–and are only successful with your attendance. As this season winds down, keep an eye out for 2012 season passes with new perks for next season.

3. Participate! We have raffles and other chances to win awesome OCCRG merch and sponsor prizes at every single game! This Saturday, at the Clash of the Corridor versus the Cedar Rapids Rollergirls, we will have a special raffle to go towards our uniform fund; Dress a Derby Dude.  There will be three male candidates in the running to be dressed up in hot pants and glitter during the October 15th bout. You can use your raffle ticket to vote for which derby dude you would like to see dressed, as well as get a chance to have your name drawn for prizes. At half time, the dude with the most raffle tickets in his pool will get dressed up in October. The more raffle tickets you buy, the more chances you have to get your name drawn for a prize, and the more votes put towards the dude of your choice. Raffle tickets are $1 for one, or $10 for 15.

At these last two bouts we will also have silent auctions to win retired jerseys (with the old logo) from current OCCRG skaters. This Saturday, you can put money on a jersey from Animal Mother, Ophelia Fracture or Left 4 Deadwards. Silent bids will be taken during the first half, and the winners will be announced during half time. Winners will also receive an autographed action shot, donated by Cathy Kovach Photography. Three more jerseys will be auctioned off at the October 15th bout as well.

4. Stay updated! Check back to our website for continual updates about upcoming announcements and events. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter. There will be plenty more opportunities for you to get involved with OCCRG and help us on our way to new uniforms.

Come help us ring in the end of the season, and help us get set and looking GREAT for our 2012 season.
