OCCRG vs. Team Unicorn Wrap-Up

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls faced off against the Mad Rollin’ Dolls’ Team Unicorn on Saturday, October 15th, and came away with a decisive win, 173-116.  This was OCCRG’s final bout for the 2011 season, and they come away with an 11-1 record, the highest win record of any roller derby team in the state.

Although OCCRG jumped to an early lead with Left 4 Deadwards scoring an unanswered 18 points in the fifth jam, the game was very physical and competitive.  With the brutal hits and fast action on the track, Team Unicorn abandoned their tradition of allowing each of their skaters to take the jammer star, and left much of the offensive burden to a few of their All-Stars, Twisted Halo, Splatter Alice, Major Kusinknocky, and Thrill Show.

However, several Team Unicorn power jams in the second half left OCCRG scrambling.  The penalty seats were kept warm in the second half, and the score began to reflect that as Team Unicorn scored almost twice as many points in the second half as the first.

The OCCRG machine was not to be stopped, though.  With deft defense, and agile offense, the ladies in black burned minutes off the clock, and managed to keep their cool, scoring 72 points in the second half, even with the ejection of powerhouse blocker, A Few Screws Lucy, with 10 minutes left in the period.

OCCRG also saw the debut of two 2011 rookies–Vomitina and Manta Rae–and the home bout debut of JB as Pulp Affliction, who previously played in the away game against Mid Iowa Rollers earlier this season.  Their contribution as blockers on the track was hard-hitting and enthusiastic, showing off their hard work of the last 10 months.

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls head into their off-season with their heads held high.  The training doesn’t stop, however, and these ladies will be continually pushing and strengthening to come back in the late winter with even more action-packed, hard hitting game then you’ve ever seen before.  Keep checking back for updates and the 2012 bout schedule.  Thank you for all your support and enthusiasm this season, and we’ll see you next year!

OCCRG 2012 Recruitment!

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls are getting ready for another recruitment, and we want you to be a part of our team!

Recruitment will be held at the Coralville Marriott on December 4th at 5 pm and 6th at 6 pm. If you are a woman, age 18 or older, with valid health insurance, you are eligible to join the team.  The Old Capitol City Roller Girls are a team of women who constantly push themselves to be better athletes, and better citizens of the communities in which we live.  Roller derby is a fast-paced, high intensity, fun sport that brings together people from all walks of life.  If you’re looking to challenge yourself and have a lot of fun, roller derby is for you!

Please bring a photo ID, proof of health insurance, sneakers, and your own mouth guard to the recruitment night.

The recruitment will consist of two parts: a skating evaluation, and an off-skates exercise routine.  Please plan accordingly to attend–the whole night will be about two to three hours.  Wear clothes that are comfortable, and be ready to sweat!  The Old Capitol City Roller Girls will provide skates and protective gear on a first-come first-serve basis.  You may have to wait in line if we do not have your size immediately available.  All gear provided by the team you use at your own risk.  If you have your own skates, protective gear, or crash helmet, you are welcome to bring that instead.  If you are accepted to the team, you will practice with the Fresh Meat, Sunday evenings from 5-8, and Tuesday evenings from 6-8.  Practices will start the first week of January.

If you are interested in joining the team as a referee or non-skating official (open to all genders, 18+) please come and show us your stuff!  We will take your information, and you will be able to skate and chat with the OCCRG officials.  Refereeing is challenging and rewarding, with opportunities to travel to many different leagues.  Skating referees train with the fresh meat skaters to learn roller derby basics, and work with the referees on rules and regulations.  If you can’t give a commitment quite that big, we always need Non-Skating Officials (NSOs) who will need to attend 1 or 2 practices a month, and work at home bouts.  Being an NSO is a great way to learn the rules, and get started in the roller derby community!

We are also holding open practices, where you can come see what we do to train, meet the skaters, and ask questions.  Those dates will be November 20th and 27th from 6-8pm.  We will also have skaters present at free skate at Grant Wood Elementary on November 4th from 7-9 pm, and at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center on November 12th from 6-9 pm, if you’d like an opportunity to skate around and meet the skaters in a more informal setting.  Both of these open skates have roller skates available free of charge.

For more information on Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby–check out the WFTDA websiteRead the rules and check out the information about gear.  You can also get great information on Derby News Network or Queen of the Rink.

If you’re interested in buying your own gear before recruitment, there are plenty of places that sell derby gear.  You’ll need: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a rounded crash helmet (like what skateboarders wear) or a regulation hockey helmet, and quad roller skates.  Sites like Sin City Skates have “Fresh Meat” packages that come with all the basic equipment at a pretty reasonable price.

If you have further questions about recruitment, shoot us an email at oldcapitolcityrollergirls@gmail.com.

See you there!
