Skater of the Month: A Few Screws Lucy

She can block, she can jam, she can do the worm. A Few Screws Lucy is a well-rounded utility player that we were happy to take into the OCCRG family last year. She came in as a transfer skater, helping us overcome the Unholy Rollers in her first bout with us, and has been a powerhouse in the pack ever since. Behind the scenes she took on a board position last year and this year, and has revamped the merch for 2012 , giving it that loving DIY touch. She also crafts our amazing posters and designs ads for the team. To top it all off, she has her very own roller derby clothing line on the side. She’s a crafting queen, a master thrifter, and a monster on skates; she was born for this sport.

Who are you?
A Few Screws Lucy!  Choosing a derby name is HARD.  I searched the internet and thought on it for weeks.  Everything I liked was already taken.  I was on my way home from practice one night thinking to myself “this derby name thing is driving me crazy.”  Then A Few Screws Lucy just popped into my head!

Day job?
Freelance graphic designer & photographer, owner of Laid Out Clothing

What position do you play/like to play? What’s your favorite part about being on the track?
Blocker/pivot/last resort jammer.  Besides the occasional worm and bad break dancing during official time-outs, I really love creating chaos on the track.  Nothing feels better than foiling the other team’s big plans (insert evil laugh here).

Any skating background?
I did quite a bit of skating as a kid.  It was mostly in the driveway at my house in my Rainbow Bright skates.  I’d try to master figure skating jumps or make ramps out of old boards and launch myself off them.  I still like trying to do all sorts of tricks though things normally don’t end well..  NO FEAR!

What’s your favorite overall thing about roller derby?
Bout day with my girls!!  Sitting on the bench with the team I love, getting to finally do what we’ve worked SO hard preparing for at practice.  Feeding off each others excitement.  Celebrating our successes together.  Ahhh…OCCRG is AMAZING!!!
How has it changed you? Better? Worse?
It’s hard not to feel like a superhero on the track.  I feel more confident than ever because of derby.  Though I have noticed I can be rather irritable and pissy if I miss practice or if it’s canceled for some reason.  I’m so use to having that time twice a week to blow off steam and release frustrations.  Sad, but true.

What have you accomplished so far?
I’ve been playing derby for over 3 years!!  In that time period, the game has changed tremendously.  Being able to adapt my style of play from just pounding on people to being a smart player is quite the accomplishment!  I’m so thankful for excellent coaching and an awesome team of refs!!
What do you still hope to accomplish?
I’d love to complete in an awesome tournament such as regionals before my derby career comes to an end.
Any advice to new or potential skaters?
If you have any desire to play derby, do it.  Give it a shot.  Honestly, it’s life changing.  The sport in itself is so fantastic, but the people involved are AMAZING.
How has derby affected the rest of your life?
It seeps into every aspect.  I think about derby constantly.  At home, while working…always.  When looking at clothes, I tend to only want to buy black and red.  I could watch DNN or youtube videos all day.  Pretty silly.
